So from my understanding, the MD3000i only connects to a server through gigabit iSCSI, vs the MD1000 connects through 12GB SAS. Does this mean the MD1000 theoretically gets 12x faster data transfer speeds. The MD3000i also has a SAS port, but from what I'm seeing in the manual it can only be used to connect to another MD1000. The place I got it from has several there, so if need be I could return this and get an actual MD1000. But would that be a good thing to do cause aren't MD3000i's supposedly better, or is that only if you're trying to use multiple hosts. I know the basics of servers, but I'm totally new to raid arrays like this. You'd use it with a PERC 5e or 6e to do the RAID; this is a 3G SAS connection, and it really only works with a single connected server. The MD3000 is the chassis of an MD1000, with controller modules that do the RAID internally, instead of letting a PERC do it. The MD3000 connects via SAS to additional drives in up to two MD1000s, and connects via SAS to up to 4 connected servers. The MD3000i is the same as an MD3000 -- RAID controllers, expansion with MD1000s -- but the servers connect via iSCSI over GigE. You can have more servers connect that way, since the servers don't connect directly and you can use a switch, but it's a little bit slower (2x GigE versus 4x 3G SAS).
