This means that your wireless signal is not encrypted and that anyone with compatible wireless technology can access your computer network and the Internet using your wireless connection. To set up wireless security, you will create and enter a unique passphrase or an alphanumeric key. Once entered, only devices with the proper key or passphrase will be allowed to establish a connection to the network. There are two basic ways to configure and implement a passphrase or key. They are WPA (WiFi Protected Access) or WPA2 and WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) 64 and 128 bit. WPA2 is best, but you can use it only if all your wireless devices support the 802.11g profile, followed by WPA and WEP, in that order. You can check to see if all other clients that you plan to put on the network support WPA2 or WPA. You can do this by checking the manual that came with each device or by checking the configuration software for the installed device. Look under Security or Encryption or Setup or Advanced Features. If all the clients support WPA2 or WPA, proceed with Setting Up Security Using WPA2 or WPA. If they do not, skip to Setting Up Security Using WEP.Submit a request. You will appreciate the superior range of the X6 wireless transmissions and the easy setup and management. Unlike other wireless access points, the X6 can support concurrent connections to both 802.11(b) and (g) devices without compromising the data rate of the higher speed devices. With competing products, an 802.11b device on an 802.11g network can bring the performance of the entire wireless network down to the slower 802.11b speed. The Model 5590 is equipped with Prism Nitro Mode technology to minimize collision problem created with a mixed network of 802.11b and 802.11g devices and maximize network performance. Prism Nitro Mode also includes packet bursting technology to deliver up to a fifty percent increase in throughput for 802.11g only networks and up to a tripling of speed in a network with both 802.11b and 802.11g devices. Wireless security includes the newer Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) protocol as well as Wired Equivalency Protection (WEP). Chris S 5.0 out of 5 stars So I replaced it with this same model that I had and it has worked fine since I have had it (like three months or so)I made the mistake of getting such a box (2wire) from ATT. It would broadcast about 1 meter (I am not kidding), meaning that I had to use an ethernet cable. My next mistake was to get a linksys router to put in front of 2wire (using the 2wire as a modem only). Everytime there was a storm or electrical surge, one or the other reset and claimed the same IP address. I had wires running everywhere and learned more about windows networking than I ever wanted to know. I had to go static IP addresses and bypass DCHP to get anything to work. So, I was trying to choose between d-link and zoom and saw one favourable review for zoom (Lopez), so I took a chance on it. As he says, it works as advertised and I am down to one small box and very few wires. The wireless is faster than the linksys. I only give the warning that, if you are like me and have other things installed that you are switching out, you should uninstall any software and get rid of old network connections. I suffered a momentary heart skip when I plugged it in and no light came on. The manual is fairly good (pdf) but is not savable on hard disk which is not too reasonable (you can print it). Now, if ATT would bundle a quality product like this, it would surely enhance its image as an IP. Does that notion require a Harvard MBA?Helps to organize and eliminate all that cabling. Is about as easy to setup as one can hope for and it works just great. Highly recommended. It will not stay on, even when power button is pushed in. You actually have to sit and HOLD the button pushed in for the unit to get power. We have had to rig it with a piece of wood pushing up against the power button held in place with duct tape and then wrapped tightly with a velcro strap in order to get it to stay connected. Even then, it cuts out and the velcro has to be tightened. So I bought a Zoom X6, and have been using it ever since, with hardly a glitch ever. In several years, we have found it necessary to restart it only a few times. Right now, it handles a desktop computer, several laptops, an independent Skype phone, an Ooma phone, and a ROKU TV player all at once, with scarcely a glitch ever. The wireless range is good too; we often take our laptops a few rooms away from the desk where the router sits, with no problem -- even for streaming movies. It's a great little device, which I highly recommend. For information on performing this update, please contact your router's manufacturer. Let us help! Choose your system We recommend that you ensure your router has the most current firmware update installed. Check with the router manufacturer for the most current information. It is up to each consumer to determine what security needs they have for their own networks, and to decide how best to configure their network settings to meet those needs. Nintendo of America Inc.
